This image came right from new headlines, during the Syrian refugee crisis, when I saw this man, who had made a dangerous water crossing, and he collapsed on the shore. In his uplifted face, I saw the trauma that he had endured, and I knew that his brokenness spoke the language of pain that all of humanity understands only too well--physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual suffering that calls forth the compassion and generosity of the world.
