The Disappeared
This group of portraits came right off the headlines. In 2016, five booksellers went missing in Hong Kong. They were widely believed to have been jailed in mainland China for printing material that might have been critical of the Communist regime. The central image, other than the portraits, is a wilted white orchid: a symbol of Hong Kong. Barbed wire is wrapped around the stem of the orchid, which has been placed in an antique style Chinese ink pot, which is a symbol of free speech. Newspaper clipping from the event have been collaged onto the surface of the canvas and then overpainted in oil.
