Challenger Deep
This mixed media abstract was inspired by the deepest known point on the Earth's seabed, which was named after the HMS Challenger, whose expedition in 1872 made the first recordings of its depth. The first manned descent took place in 1960, followed by a series of unmanned visits from 1996 to 2009. In March of 2012, a solo manned descent was made by James Francis Cameron, a noted Canadian filmmaker and environmentalist, who has produced "Avatar" and "Titanic", along with documentaries "Ghosts of the Abyss" and "Aliens of the Deep."
